Einav Yarden debuteert met een opmerkelijk programma bij Challenge Classics. Beethoven en Stravinsky worden niet vaak met elkaar gelinkt. Toch vindt één van de prijswinnaressen van de International Beethoven Competition Bonn 2009, dat ondanks de verschillen de twee componisten veel gemeen hebben. Zo ziet zij veel overeenkomsten tussen Stravinsky’s Sonate uit 1924 en de vroege Sonates (nummer 6 en 10). Alle drie de werken hebben hun eigen energie, humor en karakter. Beide componisten waren in hun tijd vernieuwers, die op hun beurt tijdgenoten hebben geïnspireerd. Het programma wordt afgesloten met miniatuurtjes van Stravinsky en de elf Bagatelles van Beethoven. Een geslaagde programmakeuze en geslaagd debuut!

Einav Yarden takes Beethoven and Stravinsky outside of their stylistic ghettos. In an era where the concept of an album hardly ever exists, it’s a delight to listen to a CD that has a beginning, middle and end. A CD that in order to understand and enjoy, one has to listen to as one unit, not as “songs” that are pulled out from the depths of digital pool and get sucked back in, anonymous as they appeared. Her CD can be seen as the two worlds she operates in, the classic and the modern: it consists, in an interchange, of music of Beethoven and Stravinsky, illuminating and challenging one another.
It is somewhat of a risk, but a risk that was worth taking, because the CD is fascinating and in no way one-sided.
Stravinsky in her playing receives all his important scope in the Sonata, and makes the body dance in the short pieces. Ragtime, Polka, Waltzes, Tango – under her hands they sound simultaneously dance-like and serious, innovative and traditional, in a fusion that when heard, the style and the right way of perceiving it become apparent. And Beethoven – his execution here is simply modern.
Yarden is very comfortable with Beethoven and in her playing he sounds personal and unique – without any exaggeration in expression or a single mannerism. Her virtuosity, her impeccable precision, is never arrogant, and the rhythmic freedom is always taken most tastefully.
And so takes out this CD Stravinsky and Beethoven of their stylistic ghettos for an hour of delight and thinking.
