Although the madrigal was the refined embodiment of the spirit of the Italian Renaissance. there were also some Dutch composers who proved to be great masters of the genre, the Haarlem musician Cornelis Tymansz Padbrue first and foremost among them. Padbrue set to music some of the finest poems by Joost van den Vondel, generally regarded as the greatest Dutch writer from the Dutch Golden Age, the famous De Kruisbergh (Mount Calvary) among them.
